The earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.
The search engine has to consider your website pages interesting enough to ‘rank’ them higher than other comparable website pages. The concept of page rank has changed significantly in recent years, and continues to be modified.
The big change is that filling your pages with hidden text and metadata no longer works. In fact, your site that was built 6 years ago may be penalized by current search engines for the very thing that once made it popular. Today, it’s about:
- The quality of the links to your site
- The words / word location within your site (the search engines have gotten very smart)
- The ‘keyword’ selection that help identify the content of your site.
How long will it take
Optimizing a website for search engine marketing (SEM) is a long term project. There are no overnight solutions that will catapult your website to the top of the page rank list. It is likely that a program put in place to improve your page rank will take 6-12 months to take full effect, but there are small things that can be done to make quick improvements.
